On Friday morning, December 12th, the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce hosted a Meet the Author event with Stephen Baker, author of The Numerati at The Free Library of Philadelphia. Mr. Baker discussed with us the incredible amounts of data that we produce each and every day through websites visited, search engine usage, credit card usage and cell phones. Certain people, who the the author calls The Numerati (scientists and mathematicians), dig through all of that data to define us and predict our purchasing patterns, medical histories, voting patterns and even potential for being a terrorist. Mr. Baker used Netflix as an example of utilization of data.  Netflix, the online dvd rental website, uses past movie rental history to predict future movies that we would enjoy. The amazing thing is that in many instances they are right! But the author also pointed out that there may be commonalities, like purchasing patterns, drawn out of the collected data that make us seem similar to others.  However, in reality, these similarities are only superficial–outside factors influence one person’s decision making and have absolutely nothing to do with someone else’s decision to purchase a similar item. It is staggering to think of the amount of data that we produce about ourselves each and every day in the public domain. As we have learned from Steven Baker, this will only be used more and more in the future to forecast our actions and predict outcomes.

On The Move volunteers enjoyed a great night at Cuba Libre for this week’s Reward Session. Volunteers were treated to an authentic atmosphere with tastes of Old Havana. With Cuba Libre, this week’s sponsors included the Philadelphia Inquirer, Daily News and Philly.com and the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE). The support of NFTE is crucially important to help sustain our society and promote entrepreneurship to young people from low-income communities. OTM volunteers were urged to help NFTE in not only the promotion of entrepreneurship to young people, but also to be a mentor. Real life stories and experiences can make a world of a difference to a young person. Next week’s OTM Reward Session will be on Friday, December 12th from 8-10:30am at The Free Library of Philadelphia.

Leadership is the driving emphasis for this year’s On the Move campaign.  When trying to define leadership, many think in terms of strength of one’s character or simply as the captain of the ship.  Last night at World Café Live, OTM volunteers had the opportunity to hear from Matt Cabrey of Shire Pharmaceuticals.  Matt reminded us that leaders also are those who get involved in community outreach.  Shire supports Fresh Artists, a non-profit program that supports young artisans in the Philadelphia School District.  What a great program they have.

OTM volunteers work hard to raise money for the Chamber, which helps to improve the regional business community.  But, the best part of the campaign is the relationships I have developed with fellow volunteers. I now know George from the Philadelphia Inquirer and Sheila from Independence Blue Cross very well.  The room is full of decision makers and I get to participate.

What I love most about this campaign is the sharing.  World Cafe Live and WXPN 88.5 are perfect examples of companies working together in our community.  A profit & a non-profit supporting their ideas and opening our ears to the artistic community.  Because of the Chamber and On the Move, I am invited to participate with the potential clients and possible vendors in some of the nicest venues in Philadelphia.

On the Move Thursday night couldn’t have been better timing. Fitting into the week right between the Phillies win Wednesday, and Friday’s celebratory parade, there was a fantastic turnout at Roy’s. How fitting we met at a Hawaiian- themed locale after our own “Flyin’ Hawaiian” Shane Victorino helped get the Phils the trophy.

Everyone was in great spirits, and it was great to see a large number of guests and first-time visitors present.

Joe Frick, always an engaging and relevant speaker, gave a very impressive talk on leadership. He discussed how leaders are individuals, and need to lead in their own way and style, and used Charlie Manuel’s management of the Phillies to drive his point home.

As we progress into the OTM season, the individuals that were strangers at the kick-off are no longer strangers. It is amazing on Thursdays to walk into a great location, and hear a great speaker, with a group of people that I am becoming to know quite well on a personal level. It makes it easy to quickly pick out guests, so that everyone that attends feels welcome and no one gets left by themselves in a corner. It also is nice to keep up with everyone because the more we understand about one another’s businesses, the more we can refer back and forth, which is the point of networking. Working for Paliani Consulting, promoting a program that increases communication and confidence in individuals, being in an environment weekly where people know, like, and interact freely with one another is really a privilege.

Last night’s On the Move event proved that networking is fun, with comedian Joe Conklin. The man of a thousand voices demonstrated himself to be a one man show. It was pretty incredible to listen to his many imitations of famous people. If I had closed my eyes I am almost certain that he could have fooled me into thinking that his characters were actually present. His quick witted comments and accurate imitates made it feel as though we were sitting in front of a TV changing channels. Not only is he a talented individual but his career is extremely impressive. It goes to show that if you are good and passionate at what you do, success will inevitably follow. (more…)

Last night’s On the Move event at G-Lounge was filled with great networking opportunities and an inspirational talk from former Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Troy Vincent.  Jim Wujcik from Sovereign Bank did a fantastic job sponsoring the event and inviting Troy to speak.  We all learned a little more about leadership and competitiveness in sports and in business.  It was fascinating hearing about the challenges NFL players and their families face.  Troy also mingled with the crowd afterwards and even told one of our sales reps that he would text him.  As a prize for last’s weeks OTM Blog contest, the Chamber gave away a signed Shane Victorino baseball which has significantly increased in value after the last two playoff series.  I wish I would have won it because I met Chase Utley and shook his hand as I was walking out of G-lounge and it would have been nice if I had something for him to sign. I wanted to thank the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce for hosting the On the Move Workshop on the importance of how to be a connector and make networking more than just exchanging business cards. Liz Dow, from LEADERSHIP Philadelphia, was excellent. Her presentation on The Connector Project was fascinating and informative. Liz discussed the importance of connecting and how connectors have encouraged social and economic change in Greater Philadelphia. Connectors are people who like and trust other people, and are liked and trusted in return. Connectors enjoy “linking” up people who might not know each other, but together accomplish good. Many times, connectors connect and walk away, not looking for anything in return. They think useful information should be shared not hoarded and typically fly under the radar. Another interesting trait is that connectors always make people feel better. When they meet you, you have their undivided attention. The capability exercises were thought provoking. It is interesting to think about the way you want to be described by people you come in contact with professionally and personally. At the end of Liz’s presentation I determined I was in the company of some amazing connectors, who were OTM volunteers! (more…)
