Happy Friday!  I just came across these videos that are definitely worth checking out:

Good Magazine put together this video about the solar powered trash cans that you may have noticed around Center City over the past few months. They’re called BigBelly Solar, and they’re pretty cool.

Since May, the City has replaced 700 traditional bins with 500 high-tech, solar powered compactors. This is an example of the innovation that is making this region a national leader in green technology. These BigBelly’s also have a big impact, they will:
-cut down trash collection trips by 75 percent
-save the city an estimated $13 million over the next 10 years
-cuts greenhouse gas emissions by 80%

This video by Forever Independent brings to life the people, places and attitudes that make the Greater Philadelphia region so unique.

Check out these articles from yesterday’s Inquirer that highlight family-owned “green” companies in our region.

Nowhere but up: Window-maker feels stimulus

Brothers hoping LED business shines

This is what John Bloom, co-founder of JKB, a lighting business, had to say when asked ”Why Pennsylvania?”

“The Eastern Seaboard [has] huge population density, it consumes a huge amount of energy, and Pennsylvania is smack in the middle of that…the opportunity to grow a business like this, especially in a climate like today – it seems crazy to me that someone hasn’t already done it.”

Do you know about other small businesses with big green goals?

Despite the economy, Greater Philadelphia is a good place for young professionals August 19, 2009

Here is YPN’s response to an article in Sunday’s Inquirer titled ”Recession a roadblock for young careers.”

Dear Editor,

This is a challenging time for every business and resident in Greater Philadelphia, particularly young workers, as Sunday’s “Recession a roadblock for young careers” points out.

That’s why it is no surprise that membership in the Young Professionals Network (YPN) of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce has increased over the past year as young people from a variety of backgrounds and industries have recognized the importance of building relationships with their peers.

Monthly YPN social events provide ambitious young workers with a place to network and exchange ideas. Our development workshops help them build the skill set necessary to advance and transition their careers. Volunteer opportunities encourage them to invest in the community.

We believe Greater Philadelphia is a dynamic place for young professionals to live and work. The area has a rich entrepreneurial spirit fueled by an extensive higher education network, a vibrant arts and cultural community, and occupies a premier location in the heart of the eastern seaboard.

Young professionals are the key to our region’s economic future. In fact, half of Pennsylvania’s new businesses will be created by people in their 20’s.  They need support to achieve their goals. YPN provides a network of support – and also seeds the future strength of the Greater Philadelphia economy.

Christopher Parker
Vice Chair, Young Professionals Network
Store Manager and Assistant Vice President, TD Bank

Greetings from your New President & CEO August 3, 2009

Brittney at workName: Brittney Ann Whitehead
Age: 17
High School: Chester High School
Employer:  Burmans Pharmacy Inc.

Why did you get involved in WorkReady’s internship program?

I became involved with the program to show my independence and to hopefully network while broadening my horizon in future prospects.

What kind of work are you doing this summer? Who are you working with?

This summer I am working as a cashier. I am working with Burmans Pharmacy Inc.

What have you learned?

I have learned that no matter what I choose to study in college, whether it’s nursing or pharmacy, the best part of both fields is the fact that I am helping somebody. Everybody at Burmans is a crucial part of running a smooth operation necessary in possibly saving someones life. Even the cashier.
