The Free Library of Philadelphia has been delighted to partner with the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce in bringing great authors to Chamber events. Last fall we were able to bring Tom Brokaw to the Chamber’s Annual Meeting and earlier this week the legendary John Bogle discussed his seventh book, Enough: True Measures of Money, Business, and Life, which offers thought-provoking insights on money, the values we should emulate in our business and professional callings, and what we should consider as the true treasures in our lives-all under the backdrop of today’s financial crisis.
Mr. Bogle’s legacy is also underscored by the tremendous benefits the Vanguard Group which he founded over 30 years ago has brought to the Greater Philadelphia Region. With 10,000 workers and more than nine million investors, Vanguard is the largest investment employer in the region. (more…)

On Monday, April 13, more than 200 young professionals gathered at St. Joe’s University School of Business for YPN’s “Unplugged” event with Mayor Michael Nutter. The YPN members and their guests were able to participate in a candid discussion with Mayor Nutter about the state of the City and the work that’s being done to resolve the City’s fiscal crisis. Through questions from the audience, Mayor Nutter was also able to show that Philadelphia is a great place to live, work and raise a family. For those that were unable to attend, please note that Mayor Nutter has promised to speak for YPN next year as well.

Serving the best of Chilean wine and cuisine, the Chilean and American Chamber of Commerce is presenting their 4th Annual “Experience the Taste of Chile” dinner on Tuesday, April 28, 2009 at the University and Whist Club in Wilmington, Delaware. Lori Tieszen, executive director of Wines of Chile USA will be the featured speaker of the event.
Chile is one of the fastest growing food exporters in the world. Currently ranked 17th, Chile is predicted to be among the world’s top 10 food exporters by 2010. And, did you know that 65% of all Chilean fruit arriving into the U.S. enters through our Delaware River waterfront? Not only has this relationship provided many delectable goods, it has created thousands of jobs for the region.
Celebrating another successful Chilean fruit season in the Greater Philadelphia region, members of the chamber and the international community will be joining together for an evening of authentic and rich Chilean flavors. Elegant, yet powerful wines for the reception will be provided by Casa Lapostolle (www.casalapostolle.com), one of Chile’s most renowned wineries.
For more information about the “Experience the Taste of Chile” dinner, please contact Ricardo Maldonado at 215-790-3627 or e-mail Ricardo@greaterphilachamber.com.
Corporate Speed Networking at Valanni April 8, 2009

My experience with the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce has paid excellent benefits. I work for a local valuation firm with 38 years of experience. Our client list includes many of the nation’s Top 100 companies nationally and internationally. I find that my valuation firm’s Chamber involvement, recently I attended “On Deck with the Phillies” as well as all three Corporate Speed Networking meetings and especially the gala finale at Valanni last night, were outstanding.
The three Corporate Speed Networking meetings allowed me to tell a lot of my peers what we do, learn how we might be able to help each other, and make some outstanding network connections and more importantly FRIENDS!
It did not hurt that after attending these Chamber events, I was able to organize some strategic meetings with organizations that my President/CEO or EVP could not make happen.
Thank you, GPCC and special thanks to Lauren and Christina for hosting a great event! Click here to view more photos.

As a former teacher, I was thrilled to participate in the 5th annual Read to Me Early Literacy story teller program. Our school day started early at The School District of Philadelphia Administration Building. More than 100 business executives took the morning off from their busy corporate schedules to read to 2,700 kindergarten and pre-K students in 23 schools throughout Philadelphia. When we arrived we were given our school assignment and a copy of the book Wild about Books written by Judy Sierra and pictures by Marc Brown (of the Arthur series). It was great fun to review the books with various business leaders. Vik Dewan, CEO of The Philadelphia Zoo, was kind enough to assist me with the pronunciation and identification of some of the animals in the book, like gnu, the g is silent! Joe Frick and Chris Cashman, the leaders of Independence Blue Cross, prepped for the classroom experience together. There was great camaraderie and excitement. It felt like the first day of school for some of us.
