Last night’s On the Move event proved that networking is fun, with comedian Joe Conklin. The man of a thousand voices demonstrated himself to be a one man show. It was pretty incredible to listen to his many imitations of famous people. If I had closed my eyes I am almost certain that he could have fooled me into thinking that his characters were actually present. His quick witted comments and accurate imitates made it feel as though we were sitting in front of a TV changing channels. Not only is he a talented individual but his career is extremely impressive. It goes to show that if you are good and passionate at what you do, success will inevitably follow. (more…)

GPCC in World Series Contest with St. Petersburg Chamber October 23, 2008

We’ve been challenged by the St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce down in Florida to a friendly wager around the 2008 World Series.  Since we all know that the Phillies are going to win the World Series just as easily as we won Game 1, we’ve gladly accepted.

We’re putting up a gift basket of Philadelphia’s great game day munchies including Tastykakes and Goldenberg’s Peanut Chews from Pennsylvania General Store, the 2009 Excellence Award Retailer of the Year.

The St. Petersburg Chamber is putting up a bushel of oranges and Cuban sandwiches.  If the Rays win, St. Petersburg Chamber President John T. Long wants our President & CEO, Mark Schweiker, to wear a Rays jersey and RaysHawk wig–whatever that is.

“When the Phillies win the World Series, we’d like a keepsake photo of John T. Long wearing a Phillies’ cap and eating a Butterscotch Krimpet,” said Mark.

We certainly look forward to seeing that.

Here in the office today, we’re all decked out in our Phillies gear, celebrating last night’s win.  Send us photos of your office’s Phillies spirit and we’ll put them up here.

GO PHILS!

Last night’s On the Move event at G-Lounge was filled with great networking opportunities and an inspirational talk from former Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Troy Vincent.  Jim Wujcik from Sovereign Bank did a fantastic job sponsoring the event and inviting Troy to speak.  We all learned a little more about leadership and competitiveness in sports and in business.  It was fascinating hearing about the challenges NFL players and their families face.  Troy also mingled with the crowd afterwards and even told one of our sales reps that he would text him.  As a prize for last’s weeks OTM Blog contest, the Chamber gave away a signed Shane Victorino baseball which has significantly increased in value after the last two playoff series.  I wish I would have won it because I met Chase Utley and shook his hand as I was walking out of G-lounge and it would have been nice if I had something for him to sign. The Committee of Seventy needs nonpartisan volunteers to help in its Voter Protection Program on November 4. Seventy assigns “citizen teams” to specific voting locations throughout the city and suburbs to provide assistance to voters, document complaints and help solve Election Day problems. Volunteers may work just a few hours in the morning, afternoon or evening, or all day. Beforehand, training sessions are offered for all participants, and all volunteers receive formal identification for Election Day purposes.

To register online and to sign up for a volunteer training session, please go to http://www.seventy.org/TakeAction_Become_A_Volunteer.aspx

Did you catch Tom Brokaw moderating the debate last night? A lot of people have been talking about him recently, and last week he was the subject of an interesting New York Times profile (read it here)

Want to see him in person? He’s the featured speaker at the Chamber’s 208th Annual Meeting on Wednesday, October 22.

The Annual Meeting celebrates the work done by the Chamber and its membership. Also, we will welcome new GPCC Chairman of the Board David L. Cohen, Executive Vice President, Comcast Corporation, and thank outgoing Chairman, Joseph A. Frick, President and CEO of Independence Blue Cross.

Meg Saligman’s “Philadelphia Muses” mural at 13th and Locust Streets

The New York Times has a great article about Philadelphia’s Mural Arts Program in today’s paper.  The organization, which is a Chamber member, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this month, and has produced over 2,800 murals across the city in its time.  It truly makes Philadelphia a prettier place and helps bridge social divides in the city.  Click here to read the article.
