The Committee of Seventy needs nonpartisan volunteers in Philadelphia to help in its Election Day Oversight Program on April 22. Seventy assigns “citizen teams” to specific voting locations throughout the city to provide assistance to voters, document complaints and help solve Election Day problems. Volunteers may work just a few hours in the morning, afternoon or evening, or all day. Beforehand, training sessions are offered for all participants, and all volunteers receive formal identification for Election Day purposes.
To register online and to sign up for a volunteer training session, please go to www.seventy.org/volunteer or call Nina Bloch at 215-557-3600 ext. 124 or nbloch@seventy.org.

Young Professional Network members participated in McClure Elementary School’s career day Tuesday morning, as a kick-off to the start of PSSA testing week. YPN volunteers visited third and fourth graders to talk about their own careers and answer any questions the children had about choosing and getting the career they want. This day proved to be an enlightening day not only for the students, but for the YPN volunteers. Many of the students had aspirations to be scientists, doctors and artists and had many questions about what they needed to do to get there and what kind of schooling is required. Every experience at McClure is always a new one, filled with hope that these students, one day, will become great scientists and doctors. (more…)

On March 24, 2008 at St. Joseph’s University, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter spoke to Young Professionals Network members about city and regional issues. The Mayor highlighted his plans for education, crime prevention and economic development. He also answered questions regarding how we can all be instrumental in helping Philadelphia become the “Next Great City.” Michael Nutter “Unplugged” was YPN’s third sold out event in a row, which shows the success of YPN’s programming in recent months. We look forward to seeing members at the April event at the Art Museum and May’s signature event at the Pyramid Club. Stay tuned for further information.

The Paradigm Award Luncheon was an amazing event honoring an amazing woman. Nearly 800 business people, family members and friends joined in on the celebration honoring Deborah M. Fretz, President & CEO of Sunoco Logistics Partners L.P. In her inspiring acceptance speech, Debbie reflected on leadership in business and the community; the importance of goals and dreams; and the difference between what we know and what we don’t. Change what you don’t know and make better what you do.
We also honored eight exceptional women who are the recipients of this year’s Paradigm Scholarship for Working Women. These women are working full time while completing their undergraduate degrees – splitting their time between work, school, and family so that they can be paradigms of success for their children and others.
Lastly, the Philos Brass Quintet of the Curtis Institute of Music gave a wonderful performance – what a treat! And, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southeastern Pennsylvania was recognized as the recipient of the Paradigm Award Gift.
To borrow from Debbie – it was sensational!

Mayor Nutter and Chamber team up to identify 2,000 summer internships March 6, 2008

On Monday, the Chamber held a press conference to launch our campaign to identify 2,000 paid internships for Philadelphia young people this summer. We’re encouraging all businesses throughout the 11-county region to either offer an internship at their workplace or to fund a position at a non-profit organization.
Mayor Nutter announced at the press conference that City Hall will provide 100 internships, funded from non-public sources. In addition, our Board chairman Joe Frick (who’s president and CEO of Independence Blue Cross) said his company will again provide 50 internships and also make a donation to fund 62 additional positions at non-profits.
With these announcements plus commitments from other employers, we already have 502 internships designated for this summer. Last summer, the Chamber’s efforts helped identify 1,049 positions, so you can see that we need your help to get to 2,000.

YPN had pleasure of attending a monthly networking event on February 27, 2008 at Di Bruno Brothers on 17th and Chestnut Street. Bill Mignucci, Jr., President of Di Bruno Brothers, was the keynote speaker and focused his address on the rich history of Di Bruno Brothers, their strong commitment to the community and their exciting opportunities to grow in the future. Most notably, Di Bruno Brothers will be opening a store in the Comcast Tower in 2008; a great compliment to their popular Chestnut Street location and their flagship store at the original location in the Italian market. Also of note, the appetizers, pasta and carving stations were delicious and affirmed Di Bruno Brothers’ commitment to quality and taste.

You can help to improve the overall impact that your business has on the environment, without too much effort. All it takes is the implementation of small changes on an individual level. Here are some ways you can help:
-
If you change the margins to .75” on a Word document you can save a significant amount of paper.
- On Word screen, go to File, then Page Set Up. Click on Margins tab, and fill in desired setting. Click on Default button (on bottom of Margins tab). You’ll be offered “Do you want to change the default settings for the page set up? This change will affect all new documents based on the normal template.” Click YES.
- Keep a separate box by your trash for paper that can be recycled.
- Print double-sided whenever you can.
- Turn off the lights in your office or at your desk when leaving for the day.
