The (Truly) Happy Work Environment
Is your company as cohesive as it could be?
Submitted by: Don Andreasen, President, Andreasen Communications
Be honest. How unified is your company? How many people are truly happy at work? Do Mondays (as the recent Monster.com commercial suggests) seem to be the ultimate act of personal drudgery? Is Wednesday “hump day” and Friday “TGIF”?
I already hear the cynical voices out there reading this column saying, “everyone feels this way at work.” I’d like to invite a differing opinion, one that suggests not only is this not the case, but that your company is an atmosphere of great joy, fun, cohesion and productivity waiting to happen. The Business After Hours hosted by the Arthur Ashe Youth Tennis and Education Center was absolutely wonderful and the food, graciously provided to the center by Restaurant Associates, was simply amazing. The space was filled to capacity with people enjoying the refreshments, enjoying the center and enjoying the company of other business people. During our lively networking, we learned about the mission of this organization: to create and promote opportunities to improve the quality of life of young people through tennis and education. At that point, they threw open the doors to the courts and we were treated to the site of eight full indoor tennis courts being used by children of all ages. They were working hard and having a good time in the process. There were a few games going on, but mostly there were dozens of volunteers teaching the children how to play and giving them a thorough workout on the courts. If you want to see charitable donations in action doing good in the community, please check them out at 4842 Ridge Avenue or online at www.AsheTennis.org – oh, and feel free to donate – they would certainly appreciate it.

More on the Budget… February 7, 2008

Next week, the House and Senate Appropriations Committees will begin reviewing Governor Rendell’s $28.3 billion budget proposal. Lawmakers face a June 30 deadline for passage of a state spending and tax plan (fyi, none of Rendell’s five previous budgets has passed by deadline).
Throughout what is sure to be an interesting budget process, we’ll be urging lawmakers to improve the competitiveness of Pennsylvania’s tax structure for businesses. In a recent Op-Ed in the PBJ, our President & CEO Mark Schweiker encouraged Governor Rendell to include in his budget the continued phase-out of the Capital Stock and Franchise Tax, as well as two improvements to the state Corporate Net Income Tax- elimination of the cap on Net Operating Losses and full implementation of a Single Sales Factor.

Earlier today, Governor Rendell unveiled his 2008-2009 budget to a joint session of the General Assembly. It includes several points that would impact businesses in Greater Philadelphia.
These fall under his new economic stimulus package called “Protecting our Progress,” which is a major element of his budget. Among other goals, this package would create new jobs through giving tax break incentives to businesses, stimulate growth and development by infusing capital, and improve our aging transportation infrastructure through some necessary investments.

Overbrook High Students Shadow Chamber Staff February 1, 2008

On January 25, 2008, for the 14th year, Philadelphia area businesses welcomed ninth grade students from the School District of Philadelphia into their workplaces to give them firsthand exposure to the everyday working world for Shadowing Day 2008.
Three students from Overbrook High School came to the Chamber. It was a pleasure working with them and getting to know their interests. It was especially great to watch them learn about new opportunities they can pursue in the future. For instance, Philip, who spent the day in our communications department, expressed an interest in art. He got very excited when he visited our graphic design department and saw the practical application his passion could lead to in the future. All of the Overbrook kids were great guests, and I hope they had as much fun at the Chamber as we did hosting them!
Shadowing is an experience during which students are paired with employee hosts for a day to learn about their particular careers. Over 1,500 students and 140 businesses participated in this exciting educational opportunity. Shadowing Day serves as an opportunity for youth to experience the workplace and generates corporate interest in creating on-going work-based mentoring opportunities for youth.
