wind_turbine_scotland.jpgThere are two great events coming up on business and the environment.  The first is Go Green to Save Green tomorrow at the Cira Centre, which will explore sustainable business practices.  The second is the 13th Annual BABC Holiday Luncheon, which will focus on renewable energy and feature Adam Bruce, Chair of the British Wind Energy Association & UK CEO of Airtricity.  Read more about the luncheon below.

Chair of the British Wind Energy Association and UK CEO of Airtricity Adam Bruce will address the international business community in Philadelphia at the Holiday Luncheon of the British American Business Council (BABC) on Friday, December 7, 12 noon at the Racquet Club of Philadelphia. Mr. Bruce will discuss the future of renewable energy, “Following Carnegie: Joining Scotland and the USA in the Age of Renewables.”

During his visit to Philadelphia, Mr. Bruce will discuss how the political, macro-economic and business case for renewable energy has continued to grow and develop over the past years. Concerns surrounding security of energy supply have increased and the debate with respect to the reality of climate change and increasing average global temperatures has been effectively concluded. The result is an ever-increasing awareness and acceptance of the need for clean, sustainable and dependable sources of energy – in short, for Renewable Energy. (more…)

Recently, the Chamber held the 4th Annual Read to Me Early Literacy Program, in which business executives read to Kindergarten and pre-K children at 20 Philadelphia public schools.   One hundred and four CEOs and other high level executives read The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister to over 2,500 kids, and spent time hanging out in their classrooms.  The program, sponsored by Bank of America, aimed to promote the importance of early childhood literacy and regularly reading aloud to young children.  The program also includes professional development workshops for teachers and parents, and donations of 300 hardback books for each school.

Yesterday, Mark testified at City Hall on the proposed Fox Chase Cancer Center expansion project.  The Chamber believes that the expansion will allow the prestigious and life-saving cancer center to remain competitive and bring 1,900 new jobs to the region.  Here’s two articles from the Inquirer and Daily News about the expansion:

mikeblog2.gif As Michael Nutter made his way through the crowd of 400 business and community leaders at his first public address as mayor-elect and “Bad to the Bone” played in the background (perhaps a favorite from his days as DJ Mix-Master Mike?), you really couldn’t help but feel like big things are in store for the future of Philly. I got to go to the Committee of Seventy’s The Next Mayor Speaks breakfast the morning after the election (co-sponsored by the Chamber), and I can’t tell you how many times I heard comments like “I’ve lived in Philly for my whole life and have never been so excited for the future of this city,” or “I’m so proud to be a Philadelphian during this critical time.” The ballroom at the Bellevue was buzzing in a way that I seldom experience at an early-morning event.

committee-of-70-mike-nutter2.jpgPhotos are up from The Next Mayor Speaks, an event hosted by the Committee of Seventy yesterday morning celebrating the mayoral election results.  The traditional post-election breakfast featured Michael Nutter’s first public address as Mayor-Elect of Philadelphia.

Al Taubenberger also spoke, as well as Mark and Joe Frick, the Chairman of our board.

For more on the event, here’s a Fox 29  news clip, an inky article, and a post from The Next Mayor Blog.

Congratulations, Mike!

Over 450 people flooded the Hyatt Regency last Thursday evening to honor eleven of the region’s finest businesses at the 25th Annual Excellence Awards celebration.  As guests enjoyed the breathtaking view across the Delaware, winners shared their stories of hard work, success and ingenuity. QVC accepted the Chamber’s inaugural Visionary Award, a new award created in celebration of the event’s Silver Anniversary.  This new award honors a small business that has grown to national recognition, but continues to support the regional small business community.  The winners included new members and familiar faces including former YPN President, and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Steve Grandizio who attributed 40% of all his business to referrals he’s received through his involvement with the Chamber.  The evening was filled with great networking, inspirational stories…and the highlight of the night… dessert served by Retailer of the Year Capogiro Gelato Artisans!
