The Chamber just recently launched its 2007-2008 CulturePass, which gives our members discounts to many of the region’s arts and cultural hot spots. I moved to Philadelphia about a year ago, and the CulturePass has been a great way to check out art exhibits, music venues, theater, tours and museums and to explore Philly’s vibrant and diverse arts and cultural community. There are over 40 venues to choose from like the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, the Mercer Museum, and the Battleship New Jersey Museum and Memorial. And most of the deals are buy-one get-one-free, so it’s super easy to grab a friend or family member and head out for a day or night of arts.  (more…)

The Eagles may be off to a slow start this season, but that didn’t stop the team’s top executives from expressing optimism for the rest of the season at the Chamber’s first ever event with the Birds!

Close to 300 Chamber members and Eagles fans packed the SCA Club Lounge at the Linc last night for Off the Record with Jeffrey Lurie and Joe Banner. The event kicked off the team’s 75th anniversary celebration.

select-logo.jpgWhen compared to the Top 25 Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs), the Greater Philadelphia region was ranked 2nd only to Boston on the number of Bachelor’s and First Professional degrees awarded, per capita. These stats and more are available in a new, first-of-its kind research study recently released by Select Greater Philadelphia.  An affiliate of the Chamber, Select is the non-profit, economic development marketing organization that promotes the region as a top-tier location for businesses.  The in-depth research study demonstrates, in specific terms, the strength of this region’s higher education sector and its direct effects on the region’s economy. For example, the study found that colleges in the region are expecting to spend $3.7 billion on capital projects over the next 5 years, excluding the Penn Connect project. This means 5,500 more construction jobs and total increase of 9,800 jobs. To view the full study, please click here.

Last night aboard the Battleship New Jersey, close to forty individuals attended the VETWORK Your Business Kickoff: Networking on the River.   Not only was this event the start of  VETWORK’s season, it was also my first as director of the program, and I couldn’t have asked for a greater beginning.

As the bright red sun set over the city skyline, participants enjoyed the company of veterans, prime contractors, and small business owners and heard in more detail the specifics of the newly revamped VETWORK Program.  After some remarks from Regina Stout of Lockheed Martin, Tom Jaskel of the Battleship New Jersey, and me, our guests were given the opportunity to tour America’s most decorated Battleship, which was really cool!

How the Business Community Responds September 17, 2007

Recently, some of Philadelphia’s jounalistic community have questioned the role of the business community in making Philadelphia’s neighborhood safer (click here to view the post).  Here’s what our President & CEO, Mark Schweiker, has to say about it:

The Chamber’s primary mission is regional economic development.  Still, even more important than the fate of our economy is the future of Greater Philadelphia and in particular, Philadelphia’s families. As a parent, I share in the sadness of the victims’ loved ones at the senseless violence that we are enduring. How to diminish if not eliminate this violence is a condition which many leaders are addressing.

Let me mention that the business community has been a steadfast participant in efforts to reduce violence. Our political efforts range from the Chamber’s 1999 testimony in Harrisburg in favor of one-gun-per-month sales legislation to our recent testimony in July in support of Philadelphia’s efforts to pass gun laws more restrictive than the state’s. Financial efforts and backing include the record-setting workplace donations to United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania in 2006 as well as the millions of dollars which individual corporations donate directly to social service agencies.

To offer opportunity to Philadelphia’s youth, it delights me to know and report to you the final tally on our Working Solutions program. It stands at 1,049 interns. That’s right. We coordinated the successful placement of 1,049 interns in employer-paid positions last summer. While there is still much more to be done, I am proud that our collective efforts indirectly help to reduce violence and inspire safer neighborhoods.

We will never cease in our efforts to support making this city safer and, in turn, this region more prosperous.

This blog is brought to you by the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce.  We hope that it will be a great resource for connecting you to the regional business community.  Check back here daily for events, profiles of businesses, professional developments articles, and public policy updates, among other business-type posts (there’s no set post-type yet, we’re just going to see how this evolves).  We’d love some guest bloggers, so if you have something to say about business in the Philly region email us, and we might post it.

Also, we’re going to rely on tips from our member companies for some of our posts.  Every Wednesday we’d like to post employee promotions, every Thursday job openings, and every Friday events held by our members.  If you’re a member and you’d like to submit any of these, send them here.
